“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire” W.B. Yeats
Every weekday I wake my children and make sure they dress smartly, eat a hearty breakfast and have everything they need for their day ahead. Then I wave them goodbye as I send them to school. On many days I then turn and ask myself ‘why?’
Why have I sent them to be confined in a relatively small space for 5 hours of their precious day, performing prescribed activities with someone they hardly know in order to complete a set of requirements laid down in law? What are they getting out of their day? What is education anyway?
Now, please hear me…this is not a blog bemoaning the current educational status quo (however much I may feel like it!), but this blog is intended to catalyse a journey; to discover if there is another, dare I say it, a better way to educate our children. A way that enables them to become good citizens of the future, with all the skills, creativity and confidence to live life well, for themselves and for the benefit of others.
So, what is education? What does it mean to educate a child?
To me it means 3 things:
1. A space where people can discover who they are and be confident in that
2. An exploration of their world and beyond, a chance for discovery, for new skills and fun!
3. A preparation for all that they may face in life, both growing up and in the future
Personally, I’d love to be able to provide my children with a place where they can be supported and encouraged to explore these questions for themselves: Who am I?Where do I fit in the world? What tools do I need to take my place in the world?
What about you…what does education mean to you?
I’d love to hear your views
